“You sure this is alright…?”
Sonia let go of Angie’s hand and turned to her, cocking her head at Angie’s question.
“What do you mean, Angel?”
Angie quickly became visibly flustered at just that nickname.
Angel. The name she’d go by with one-night lovers and concert flings. But this time… it was different.
Angie just shook her head.
“With her, I mean. I don’t wanna interfere…”
By her, of course, Angie meant Sonia’s current girlfriend, Nessa.
Sonia just laughed.
“We went over this, of course it is! We’re open, and this is just a casual side thing! And I mean, Nessie likes you too, if you ever wanted to…”
Sonia’s words were cut off by Angie’s shushing motion.
“Yea, yea, I know! I’ve just… never done something like this before.” Angie said, her words going into an uncharacteristic murmur.
There was a moment of silence between the two, before a waiting staff member approached the two.
Right.
Angie was on a date – not only her first date with Sonia, but her first date period. She’d never bothered with romance, aside from the aforementioned flings with people she never saw again, so she was admittedly very nervous. Sonia had come to accept her and Angie didn’t want to screw it all up because she was unfamiliar with true one-on-one intimacy.
She found herself to be lost in thought as she grabbed Sonia’s hand, and walked over to the restaurant booth where the two sat next to each other. Angie let out a sigh, which caught Sonia’s attention.
“You feeling alright?” she asked, propping up her menu and proceeding to look it over.
Angie was quiet for a moment before rubbing her eye.
“Yea… I mean, if I gotta be honest, I’ve… literally never done this before.”
“This?”
“Going on a proper date, I mean.”
Sonia snrked with a smile.
“I find that hard to believe. What woman WOULDN’T want you?”
Angie grew red. She wasn’t sure what Sonia saw in her… but as it would seem, Sonia had an answer to that as well.
“You’re strong, free-spirited, helpful…” Sonia said as she rested her head in the palm of her hand, closing her eyes in a smile. “You work through anything, no matter how tough it is, because you’re tougher.”
“Uuuuuahhhhhhhggg…” Angie groaned, in an almost defeated tone. She propped her arms up on the table and hid her blushed face in them. As much as she’d poke fun at Colress for being awkward, it would seem she herself was no different when it came to affection and praise.
“You’re blushing! You totally are!” Sonia said with a giggle, patting Angie on the shoulder. “I hope I’m not being too forwards, I just… really admire you.” she said softly.
Angie let out another sigh.
“No, it’s… alright. I appreciate it more than I could ever express.”
She lifted her head from her arms and scratched the back of her head.
“I’m just not used to it… but I guess I can learn!”
Sonia smiled, and the two talked through the night. They discussed work, mostly – how Angie was getting ever-preoccupied with the League, and how Sonia’s research papers were going. Angie was able to follow along with Sonia’s infodumps fairly well, given her knowledge of scientific background thanks to Colress.
It was… calming to listen to her. Angie would lean into Sonia’s side as she talked, nodding along and giving input when she could.
The night went by quickly enough, filled with lots of chatter and laughter. Angie ended up paying the bill and the two walked back to Sonia’s home together.
“You know, for never going on a date before, I think you did a wonderful job!” Sonia said with a smile.
Though Angie’s look was briefly flustered, she managed to give a genuine smile back as well.
“I’m glad I got to have my first date with you.”
