Charlie is certainly an odd case – having ditched their home and school at only age 11, they’d always dreamed of becoming a pokemon master – a champion to end all champions.
Through years of training and countless ranked matches, Charlie finally made their way to the League Summit in 2029 – only to lose in the semifinal round to a girl who brought in Ho-Oh.
Charlie was in a place of despair for years, thinking they had failed their main goal. But a sudden call from the Global League Chairman Cynthia changed that – she wished for Charlie to succeed her role.
But it came with a catch.
Cynthia felt that Charlie had to work on growth in other places… like their responsibility. So, Charlie ‘trained’ under former champion Steven Stone, mostly helping around doing chores and babysitting his daughter Ruby.
When Ruby turned 10, Charlie was requested to accompany her to Paldea to watch after her – and while Ruby ended up being able to mostly fend for herself, Charlie got caught up in their own situation – meeting the mentor of Ruby’s friend, along with the chairman of the Paldean Pokemon League, Geeta – a trainer who was also keen on taking Cynthia’s seat when she retired.
Though Geeta and Charlie’s rivalry may be heated, could an accidental unsealing of ancient evils get these two champions to get along?
Appearance
Charlie is 5’7″, with an average build. They have messy brown hair, and blue eyes – though one eye tends to be covered by their hair.
They’re frequently seen in a pikachu hoodie they’ve had since their teenage years, which is in surprisingly good shape for its age.

Personality
Charlie is a bit over-confident, almost to a childish degree – they seem to have a superiority complex when it comes to battling. And though they have the skills to back up their cockiness in most cases, they can be quick to jump to frustration and anger if they’re backed into a corner, and have exceptionally poor sportsmanship.
In casual conversation, they tend to be smug and sarcastic, and have trouble coming to agreements – frequently finding themselves getting caught in arguments.
Though, it’s not all bad – many say that despite being annoying, Charlie is quite entertaining – whether intentionally or not.
Story
I’ll get to it… eventually.
Skills
Pokemon training:
- Because of Charlie’s young obsession with the League, they were keen on studying battle techniques even after they ditched school. Through a mix of hard competitive studying and battle experience, Charlie has risen to Champion levels.
- Their houndoom, Amanita, is actually just Charlie’s family dog that they ran away with, and is capable of mega evolving.
Persistence:
- Charlie is persistent, to an almost obnoxious degree. They simply don’t know when to quit! If they have a goal in mind, they will attempt to reach it for years if they have to.
- This only applies to self-set goals, however. It’s very hard to get Charlie to do something they don’t want to do.

Relationships
Geeta – Rival
There’s rarely a moment where Geeta and Charlie aren’t arguing about something or other – even if it’s something that doesn’t really matter. Something about their personalities just seems to spark disagreement. Charlie won’t really admit so, but they kind of enjoy the mutual teasing banter that they have with Geeta.
Ruby – Babysat
While Charlie isn’t a huge fan of kids, they can tolerate Ruby. They feel a sense of accomplishment whenever they succeed in wowing Ruby with battling facts and their achievements, which they’d often tell as bedtime stories when she was younger. Though Charlie’s accompaniment of Ruby in Paldea was short-lived, they’d still assist her with things like transport when needed.
Daji – Mutual peacekeeper
Despite Charlie’s confrontational attitude, they never seemed to have any issue getting along with Daji. Her aura just seems to make them chill out a little, which is useful for when Daji needs Charlie and Geeta to work together.
Cynthia – Boss
Though Charlie idolized Cynthia while growing up, getting to know her on a personal level has vastly changed Charlie’s opinion on her. They tend to refer to her as a ‘weird old lady’, which Cynthia doesn’t seem to mind.
Minor relationships
Steven – Other boss
Steven was also someone that Charlie looked up to as a child, but coming to know him personally was a bit jarring because he just seemed like a normal guy. They’d appreciate him more if he didn’t leave them babysitting late nights so often.
Spinch – Tiring
Just because Spinch is Ruby’s best friend doesn’t mean that they get along with Charlie. Charlie thinks that Spinch is weird and a bit too energetic to handle properly – having had to deal with them running off one too many times.
Trivia
- Charlie is very opinionated on cheap microwavable food, given that’s what they lived off of for so long.
- Charlie’s parents have seen them on TV during the League Summit, and Cynthia has actually reached out to them. They’d wish Charlie would at least visit, but ultimately are glad they’re happy.
- The collar they sometimes wear actually used to belong to Amanita – who no longer wears said collar due to becoming a battler. Charlie didn’t want to toss it due to sentimental value, and also because it has their old home address and phone number engraved on it.
- Charlie does not have a driver’s license, but drives anyways on rural route roads. Surprisingly, they have yet to crash a vehicle – the worst they’ve done is wreck a tire because of a diglett.
Meta commentary
- Out of all the thinly-veiled self inserts in Pokeau… Charlie is definitely up there.
