Diana

Return to Ultra Arc characters || Page last updated: December 14th, 2023

While the idea of ‘anomalies’ existing is generally a taboo subject reserved for occultists, Diana is a determined teenager set to break the boundaries in order to help other.

Diana was not naturally born – rather, she was created by Tonantzintla as an artificial fusion of genetics after Dina and Rosetta had mentioned family to them. Despite her odd circumstances of of birth, Diana was treasured by her parents and had an idyllic childhood, despite her being a more reserved and anxious type, afraid of socialization.

While she tended to keep to herself and avoid trouble throughout her schooling, a fateful encounter and a dropped object led to Diana unintentionally unsealing Yukarin – a powerful anomaly… and Tonantzintla’s ex-wife. With Yukarin’s guidance – and later the guidance of Tonantzintla themselves – it seemed there was an important mission in play for Diana.
Without guidance and fellowship, anomalies can quickly become unstable and dangerous. So, using her own anomalous detection power, Diana was to provide a bridge for help.

Doing all that socializing sounds kind of like a nightmare to Diana, alongside the other more pressing dangers unstable anomalies would pose… in between school drama, family ties, and crushes, it’s almost too much to bear.
But with her newfound mentors and confidence, Diana feels certain there’s no obstacle she can’t overcome.

Appearance

Diana is 5’05”, with a thin build. She has dark blue-grey eyes, freckles, and visible piebaldism on her skin and forelock. She has droopy, purple rabbit ears, with one surrounded by a heart-shaped ‘false halo’, and medium-sized wings on her lower back. While generally not visible due to clothing, Diana’s ‘brain’ takes more after deoxys, and is located in an open cavity in her upper chest.

She generally has a ‘preppy’ sense of style, preferring to wear clothing with an air of formality to it.

Personality

Diana could definitely classify as a bit of a nerdy stereotype – she’s bookish, skittish, and doesn’t really have many friends her age outside of relatives. She’s always generally had a hard time understanding other people, and is quick to panic if she thinks she’s messed up a social situation. She’s truly kindhearted and wants to do her best to help others and fit in, but her anxieties are often a barrier to this.

Despite being raised in a relatively relaxed and discipline-free home and having no reason to fear repercussions, Diana is flighty about taking risks, being too assertive, or being caught in arguments.

Story

I’ll get to it… eventually.

Skills

Anomalous protection:

  • Diana isn’t any anomaly – being created by Tonantzintla, Diana seems to have a heightened level of protection against anomalous decay, while still possessing the expected abilities of a main sequence anomaly (notably being detection of fellow anomalies).

Hybrid abilities:

  • While a hybrid between rabbitfolk and deoxys is technically impossible, Diana is the result of a genetic fusion by a pseudo god, and manages to exist anyways. However, it would seem any abilities she inherited came exclusively from her deoxys lineage, while her outward appearence more closely resembles one of rabbitfolk.
    • Chest core:
      • The ‘core’ in Diana’s chest, which functions like both a brain and a heart, grants her a small amount of psychic energy. She doesn’t know how to use this.
    • Noodle arms:
      • Diana can ‘unbind’ each of her arms into two prehensile tendril-like arms. She thinks this is weird, though.
  • Diana’s ‘halo’ is purely cosmetic, and she cannot morph it into a head bubble, as it does not contain the energy to do so.

Relationships

Rosetta – Mother

Diana loves her mom, and is thankful for the amount of emotional support and ‘hyping up’ she gives in times when Diana is doubting herself. However, she tends to feel a bit more easily embarrassed by her, simply because of Rosetta’s more extravagant nature.

Dina – Mother

Dina is the best study buddy Diana could ever wish for, even if she intentionally refuses to answer some of her questions sometimes. She’s also very good at logically helping Diana overcome her various anxieties.

Isa – Crush

Isa is a classmate of Diana’s, and on account of how she’s one of the few peers who hangs out with Diana and how cool Diana thinks she is, Diana has a bit of an obvious crush on her. Still, Isa is completely oblivious to this in every way.

Yukarin – ‘Advisor’

Diana thinks that Yukarin is… odd. Diana is aware she’s definitely in an unstable state of mind and that she probably shouldn’t be spending time with her, however, Diana feels a bit of a responsibility for accidentally freeing Yukarin, in that she should help her out with her problems. It seems Yukarin enjoys Diana’s company, though, and helps her hone her anomalous abilities.

Tonantzintla – Advisor

Diana’s opinion on Tonantzintla is that they’re even stranger than Yukarin – partially due to them being responsible for her creation. She thinks they need to deal with their interpersonal issues instead of avoiding them and venting about them to her of all people, but can’t argue that their guidance regarding the Violet Detector missions is valuable.

Minor relationships

Maria – ‘Cousin’

Maria is someone that Diana sees as family, but still feels like they aren’t quite on the same wavelength. Maria’s frequent use of sarcasm often flies completely over Diana’s head.

Arael – Frustrated by

Deep down, Diana feels bad for Arael and is aware she has her own issues to work through that caused her to act the way she did… but deeper down, Diana is frustrated and confused as to why Arael decided to target her frustrations her way, and is kind of glad that ever since Arael got expelled, she doesn’t have to deal with her anymore.

Mona – Distant ‘cousin’

While Diana finds Mona to be the one she can vibe with the most of her ‘extended family’, she also just doesn’t see Mona much, if more than once at all per year.

Trivia

  • While she’s not the best as reading the emotes of others or detecting things like sarcasm, Diana often reacts in exaggerated manners herself.
  • Diana has been to the Underdeck, but only the very upper layers to meet up with Isa.
  • She isn’t quite sure what she wants to do once she graduates, and is generally hoping that her current situation will lead to some answers in that regard.
  • She has a refined palate, so she orders in food more often than not – because Dina can’t cook, and Rosetta’s style of cooking it too ‘unrefined’.

Meta commentary

  • Diana was inspired off the Princess Diana beanie baby my grandmother gave me for the holidays last year – she knew it’d be an important thing for me, so it was the sole beanie baby she kept in order to pass it over to me!
  • Diana’s title, the ‘Violet detector’, is based off the title of my eternal WIP Yokai Watch 2 romhack… which is based off of the title of a Touhou game.
