“What you’re doing is already incredibly dangerous. If you push your luck too hard…”

–Dina, Jelly Stone

In a top secret facility located in the Ultra Station, a lone scientist works tirelessly to maintain a project thought to be hopeless – that was, until her eureka.

While closed off about any personal details, Dina makes it abundantly clear that she knows what she’s doing.
She was the lead researcher on nihilego at the Deoxys Empire’s premier scientific facility – eventually, making a breakthrough in the form of a fusion between nihilego and an intelligent species.
But after bonding with this fusion, as well as learning of her government’s true motives for her research… Dina had felt she couldn’t continue in good faith.

While Dina was content to give up her life in a heist to ensure the safety of the fusion, fate had other plans. Through love, negotiation, and mystery, Dina found herself wound up in some sort of adventure time and time again – whether it be saving the world from mutually assured destruction, or summoning a 3,000 year old demigod.

Now, though? Dina is content to just take it easy. After all, when she’s not off unravelling some age-old mystery, she still has her wife and daughter waiting for her at home.

Appearance

Dina is 5’08”; which, while only an inch taller, in uncommon for her species. She also possesses a shiny-type piebald pattern – along with her height, this is believed to be a result of an interference during her creation.

She’s often spotted in very ‘business casual’ clothing, and always in a white labcoat – though the only time she takes this off is at home.

Personality

Dina can be very blunt and serious, simply due to it being the norm in her culture. However, due to an excessive interest in the cultures of other species and places, Dina actively makes an effort to be more forwards with her emotions… even if it may come across as harsh.
It can be hard to ‘crack’ Dina’s serious side, but she’s surprisingly charismatic with those she finds adoration in.

She has a strong sense of justice, and though she feels some things ‘must be done for the sake of science’, she still strongly feels sympathy for others.
When upset, she usually relies on malicious compliance until she feels the time is right.

Story

I’ll get to it… eventually.

Skills

Biochemistry:

  • Dina was appointed to her job for a reason – her dedication and skill are unmatched, which is probably why she hadn’t been fired for blatantly insulting her governmental higher-ups.
    • Her primary focus of research is on the parasite nihilego, and the functions of its toxins. However, this research went stagnant after Abzu’s ‘death’, as Dina was left with just the single live sample after a period of time – which she intended to save for the fusion experiment.

Cooking:

  • While she may not require food in the traditional humanform sense herself, Dina enjoys cooking for others and is rather good at it, too. She chalks it up to being a ‘different kind of chemistry’ as explanation.
    • While not as proficient in creating her own recipes from scratch, Dina can follow a recipe to a T and then remember it perfectly afterwards.

Relationships

Laura – Daughter figure

Laura voluntarily participated in the fusion experiment, in a dark emotional period of her life. But after becoming close with Dina, Laura’s true personality was able to shine again – Laura is like a daughter to Dina, and her comfort and happiness is Dina’s number one priority… even if it may entail self-sacrifice. Dina was able to give Laura a rekindled joy and new chance at life – a joy she hopes she can preserve for as long as she can.

Rosetta – Forever intertwined

Originally meeting after Abzu made an absurd charge at Rosetta’s hotel on Dina’s card, the two found an incredible solidarity in each other afterwards – beyond one of a professional degree. They work together in perfect harmony, both in the art of saving the world and in love.

Diana – Daughter

Though Diana being manifested into the world by Tonantzintla was… unexpected, Dina took parenthood in a stride. She wants nothing more than to see her daughter excel and succeed, and is rather appreciative that Diana enjoys listening to her ramble about ‘nerdier’ things.

Chantal – Daughter figure

Chantal is allegedly a distant family member of one of Rosetta’s lead employees. Still, Dina took Rosetta’s word and hired Chantal as her paper-running intern, and the two have grown surprisingly close for supervisor and employee. While not as fond of her as she is with Laura, Dina cares for her dreams and safety quite a bit.

Abzu – Old friend

An old friend, whom Dina saved the life of in the first semi-successful case of acute nihiltoxin poisoning reversal. Abzu used to collect samples for Dina, including the live specimen used to create the fusion experiment. Dina hasn’t heard from Abzu much lately, but trusts they’re doing ok.

Tiamat – Old friend

Another old friend, though less close than Dina was with Abzu. Dina was someone Tiamat felt she could confide to as Abzu’s behavior grew risky. Dina wants to visit sometime, but is usually too busy.

Tonantzintla – Friends???

Dina is sort of conflicted on Tonan, simply because she knows others have very mixed feelings about them. But ultimately, due to less ‘culture shock’, Dina is able to get along with Tonan a bit better than most others. She also figures there must be some kind of ‘link’ between them, as they share the same voice… but given how Tonan seems to know and not elaborate further, Dina doesn’t push.

Athena – Daughter figure

Dina was initially judgmental of Athena due to their general outlooks not going together well at first, but over time Dina has grown a fondness for Athena, and regards her as a daughter figure – as she wishes to see her grow and improve like a parent would.

Daichi – Supervisor

Dina respects Daichi, however doesn’t know her much on a non-work level. Though, Dina appreciates how Daichi is willing to get her hands dirty and help with things herself, unlike her former supervisors.

Minor relationships

Amity – Partial daughter figure

Though Dina isn’t quite as familiar with Amity as Rosetta is, she still welcomes her into the family with open arms. Dina has a particular interest in the old Deoxian Empire technology her past caretakers were studying, and assists her with deciphering the notes left behind.

Yukarin – Distantly friendly

Because of Dina’s apparent link with Tonantzintla, interactions between them can sometimes be… awkward. Dina wants to be closer with Yukarin, but respects her boundaries – though Yukarin does wish she could know Dina a bit better, too.

Arael – Tense around

Dina doesn’t have the greatest opinion of Arael, due to her treatment of Diana… but Dina can’t deny she’s greatly intriguing. Dina wishes she was in a position to study her sheer power more, but prioritizes keeping an eye on her as she begins to hang around her daughter more willingly.

Dokuro – Doesn’t understand

Dokuro is a friend of Diana’s that Dina is most familiar with. She just thinks he’s weird, but ultimately harmless to Diana as a bad influence.

Faline – Tense around

Dina completely understands why Faline would have a deep-rooted hatred for her, but that doesn’t stop Dina from fearing her due to Faline’s sheer power.

Coco – Patient

Dina is not familiar with Coco, however, she preformed a gene splicing experiment on Coco as a ‘last resort’ to save her from severe sudden illness at Athena’s request. Dina is glad Coco seems to be adjusting well.

Trivia

  • She definitely sounds like GLADoS.
  • She has a hard time keeping track of all the pop culture references Laura explains to her.
  • Deoxys culturally do not have a concept of ‘gender’, but Dina chooses to identify with a feminine label – as she finds it fits her.
  • Dina’s psychic abilities are very weak compared to the species norm, though she hides this very well.

Meta commentary

  • The Dina/Rosetta slowburn period practically didn’t exist – as soon as Rosetta joined the cast, it was pretty much set. However, it did take a hot minute for their relationship to ever be mentioned publicly.
  • Dina has a non-canon human form, the appearance of which solidifies that fact that she’s rather butchy.
