Dory

Return to Ultra Arc characters || Page last updated: October 10th, 2024

15 years ago, when Lunaires was overtaken and destabilized… loose rays of pure, condensed divine energy shot out all across Ultra Space. And as fortune or misfortune would have it, Dory was hit by one.

She seldom gets into too much detail about her past – all that’s important to know is that when Dory suffered an anomalous collapse shortly after becoming an anomaly… she was entirely forgotten by the world.
While such an event was expectedly filled with grief and despair, Dory was able to come out of it with a renewed sense of self, a blank slate. With that blank slate… Dory promised herself that she wanted to be someone who could do as much for others as she could. Someone who could be remembered.

After graduating high school, Dory was able to net a job at a mall video game store. After she managed to outlast every other employee and become the manager – she was able to effectively make the store her own little hangout. She’d cross paths with many, her store becoming a base of operations for both the nerdy and the troubled.

But one person seemed to stand out – a teenage girl accompanied by a strange being that radiated pure chaotic power. And as things would have it… Dory’s decision to investigate what the girl was doing late that night would kick off the start of Dory’s own adventure.

Appearance

Dory is 5’08” (172cm), with a fat body type. She has messy purple hair tied into a ponytail, the tips of which being lighter from being bleached. She has semi-droopy ears, with fur in a purplish off-black color and white speckles.
While some claim that she has sharp teeth, Dory doesn’t seem to truly confirm or deny this.

She tends to dress very casually, often wearing a variety of graphic-style tees and tucking them into shorts or pants.

Personality

Outgoing and charismatic to her core, Dory seems to get along with just about anyone. She’s able to assess others quickly, and adjust how she speaks to match their speed if needed.
True to herself though, Dory vibes best with others who she shares nerdy interests with – and is able to bond over media especially well.

Because she’s seen by many to be a trustworthy and friendly face, Dory is often very protective of those who seek her out for help of some kind, and does her best to see through whatever help is needed. She refuses to give up, even if persistence is to her detriment in a given situation.

Story

I’ll get to it… eventually.

Skills

Baku:

  • Dory’s abilities as an anomaly manifest in her various dream-related abilities – abilities which, despite being on her lonesome with them – have been reigned in and perfected quite well.
  • Hypnosis:
    • Dory is capable of hypnotizing living beings rather effectively in order to access their psyche, though depending on willingness and other factors, some individuals are easier to ‘tap into’ than others.
  • Manipulation of the psyche:
    • Once Dory has entered the mindspace of an individual, she has a limited amount of control over their unconscious thoughts. This is mostly limited to the ability to project dreams and nightmares.
  • Dream eating and memory erasure:
    • Or, ‘eating’, technically. Dory is capable of erasing both memories and dreams once she’s gained access to a psyche.
    • This also, surprisingly, extends to technology. However, Dory seldom eats software-based memories, because they ‘taste bad’.

Charisma:

  • Having to build yourself back up from nothing takes wit – and it’s a wit that Dory holds proudly. She’s effective with communication and negotiation, as well as ensuring others get along with each other in her presence, too.

Gaming:

  • While it’s something to be a bit expected of her, Dory is quite skilled at a variety of game genres. Though her skill is admittedly nothing tournament-winning, it’s certainly enough to entertain customers who want to watch her play a game demo.

Relationships

Hajime – Boyfriend

While it was a mix up that caused the two to cross paths, they practically hit it off at first sight. Their similarly nerdy interests and ideals make every moment together enjoyable, and if uninterrupted, the two could probably chatter around for ages. They’re a bit infamous for the amount of PDA they mutually show.

Dokuro – Good friends

Sometimes, the way they bicker may have people thinking their relationship is the opposite – but Dory and Dokuro find that they work very well together in all kinds of scenarios. Despite being notably suspicious to most others, Dory finds she can trust Dokuro with important things.

Diana – ‘Lil bro’ friend

Though Diana isn’t nearly as extroverted as Dory, her determination and knowledge are more than enough reason to welcome her to the friendgroup. Because Diana is younger and often given tasks of great importance, Dory acts like an encouraging older sister around Diana – and wants to be a solid pillar she can lean on.

Breakfast – Friends

Dory doesn’t know Breakfast too well, but would still consider her a friend nonetheless – after all, it seems that Breakfast is more comfortable with the distance, and respects Dory for the space she gives.
Dory is particularly grateful for Breakfast’s tolerance of PDA, and long conversations with Hajime.

Yukarin – Friends

Yukarin may be an age-old demigod, but Dory doesn’t let that impact her view of Yukarin much. To Dory, Yukarin is a bit like she was in the past – and figures that she might as well be a source of support to her that she wished she had herself.

Minor relationships

Abner – Friendly face

Being an anomaly, Dory eventually found her way to the Dream Line Express – and like many who find the train line, she has an overall positive opinion of Abner. Though she isn’t very familiar with him on a more personal level, her proximity to Yukarin and Diana give her a bit of a foothold compared to the average passenger.

Rosetta – Admires

Like to many, Rosetta is an inspiring and generous public figure… and quite frankly, was the last person Dory expected to be the mother of one of her best friends. Rosetta is probably the only person who can crack Dory’s confident and charismatic composure, simply because Dory is a bit too starstruck.

Tonantzintla – Weirded out by

Dory isn’t super sure what to think of Tonan. Because they seem fine from her experiences with them, and their closeness to Diana… but Yukarin’s feelings have definitely bled over onto Dory’s opinion.

Arael – Suspicious of

Dory doesn’t like Arael, simply because of the hurt she caused for both herself and her friends. But… she also understands that Arael just really needed some help of her own. The empathy isn’t enough to forgive her, and Dory still remains wary of Arael… but she’s still willing to give a second chance.

Trivia

  • Dory’s favorite genres of video games are puzzle-platformers and RPGs. She has a particular soft spot for ‘retro’ games, too.
  • Though she doesn’t actually need it to preform hypnosis, she often carries a coin pendulum with her – it’s more of a lucky charm.
  • While Dory doesn’t seem to have any plans for further education herself, she’s quite popular on Hajime’s campus when she visits.
  • Dory prefers the city quite a bit to the more ‘rural’ areas of Ultra Space, and had a habit of complaining when she visited Borderbeach or Ultra Forest in the past. It’s the humidity.

Meta commentary

  • Dory is based off of Baku/Bakulia from Yokai Watch! Specifically, the teammate from my YKW2 playthrough, which serves as the basis for the Violet Detector arc.
    • she could solo literally anything #dorysweep
  • Dory’s name comes as a distortion of ‘Doremy’ – after Doremy Sweet, a baku from Touhou Project.
  • Before it was called ‘Violet Detector’ and was simply referred to as ‘The Mad Tea Party’, Dory was associated with the Mad Hatter.
