Originally, Hollyhock was simply intended to be an android commissioned my Ultra Megalopolis’s government to specialize in the bio sector, as there was were worries of a food shortage at the time. But as one of her coworkers made a groundbreaking discovery relating to a thought to be lost laboratory in the Ultra Ruins, it would appear Hollyhock’s unique knowledge and abilities were needed.
Hollyhock acted as the bunker mission’s ‘lifeline’, inhabiting its computer systems in her digital form – in between managing her complicated interpersonal relationships with her physical body at home.
While the mission started out fine, things quickly went awry when misconduct resulted in a child being being born. So, responsibility would often fall on Hollyhock to ensure this child was alright as her parents were busy.
But due to the precarious conditions of the Ultra Ruins, the child’s in-person caretakers began to drop dead, and confidence at HQ dwindled – leaving Hollyhock as the only source of communication.
Inevitably, after 18 years and the rest of the assignment’s physical scientists succumbing to the Ruin’s divine energy, the child remained – now grown up. But rations had finally run out, so the child had no choice but to leave – shutting Hollyhock out of the systems for good, and leaving her in the dark.
Now, forced to face the reality at home, in the midst of her unsteady relationships due to the stress the mission caused and a new political tension straining her partner… Hollyhock decided she had to set out to ensure the child was ok.
After searching high and low, Hollyhock was able to reunite with Amity in the Ultra Station – and now, with the two together again, one question remained;
What was the machine in that bunker?
Appearance
Hollyhock is 5’4″, with an average-curvy build. She has salmon colored hair, and maroon eyes. She has long,semi-lopped rabbit ears, as well as a fluffy rounded tail and paws for feet. On her right leg, she has a projection of a blooming cherry tree over a sunset that acts as a ‘cooling pocket’.
Hollyhock’s ‘model’ of AI is unique, in that it allows her to be fully conscious and functional both within the digital realm, and within the physical realm by inhabiting an android body. Because Hollyhock was originally commissioned as an android, her digital manifestation is practically identical to her physical one – however, it lacks the charge packs that make up a star-like ‘halo’ in her physical form.
Personality
Hollyhock is very reserved, and has difficulty speaking her mind and quickly crumbles if confronted with an argumentative type. This normally didn’t cause her any issues, due to her line of work being largely solo – but became glaringly evident during the bunker mission. She has a lot of thoughts about what’s best for her friends and colleagues, but is often too nervous to speak them out in fear of backlash.
That said, she tries to be a positive beacon nonetheless. She doesn’t see a problem with sacrificing her own comfort for others, feeling that the knowledge of them being happy is enough.
Story
I’ll get to it… eventually.
Skills
Model abilities:
- Hollyhock’s model of AI is one not bound to either solely the physical realm or the digital one – she is capable of functioning completely in both, and has different specialties for each plane.
- In the digital realm, she often appears as a shimeji-like desktop assistant or vtuber-like avatar to the outside. Here, she’s capable of ‘physically’ sorting and parsing information where it’d be more difficult for her physical peers to do manually.
- In the physical realm, Hollyhock inhabits an android shell made for her. Due to the sophistication her the model, she’s almost indistinguishable from any other humanoid species and can do just about anything they could, with expected useful robotic additions.
- Notably, Hollyhock can record audio logs and store them, which she doesn’t use for any practical purposes and instead treats this as a way to ensure memories stay.
Biotech:
- Hollyhock is a talented biotech, and is very in tune with flora and fauna – though her specialty is in edible plants.
- More specifically, Hollyhock specializes in food sources that can grow in no-light or strictly indoor conditions.
Relationships
Amity – Former caretaker of
Hollyhock cares greatly for Amity’s wellbeing and safety, to a degree a mother would about their child. She’s happy that, despite everything, Amity has grown up alright.
Qing’e – Complicated
Qing’e was the final scientist of the bunker group, who eventually lost her mind due to the circumstances – only to leave in desperation and die. Hollyhock is shocked that her corpse was reanimated, but understands why Qing’e now wants to keep her distance, as their parting circumstances weren’t great.
Ginkgo – Romantic interest
Due to Ginkgo’s high political standing, the two opt to keep their relationship a secret – but that doesn’t change the fact that Hollyhock is absolutely smitten with Ginkgo.
Rosetta – Friendly acquaintance
While Hollyhock isn’t awfully familiar with Rosetta, she knows she can trust her and her decisions. They ‘share custody’ of Amity.
Dina – Ally
Hollyhock greatly admires Dina’s expertise, and finds her a joy to work with. Dina assisted to deciphering the documents left behind in the bunker.
Trivia
- Hollyhock is alright with water, but if put in excessive humidity for too long, her battery drains faster.
- A partial reason she seems to get flustered so easily is because she’s studied expressions from romance movies.
- The list of extra features her android body includes is extensive – so extensive, that Hollyhock is sometimes surprised she can do some things.
- She’s been known to search out games on digital systems she inhabits during downtime, with her go-to usually being solitaire.
Meta commentary
- Hollyhock’s design was originally inspired by Professor Fennel from Pokemon, alongside the ways in which uniforms in that series are stylized.
