Isabelle

Isabelle had lived in Waterfall all her life, alongside her grandmother – the town’s mayor. While many of younger generations tend to leave Waterfall for Megalopolis or elsewhere, Isabelle’s mother passed during childbirth and she was left in her grandmother’s care… who was a woman with her roots planted.
So, while many saw Waterfall as a place of passing through, it was home to Isabelle. A home that meant more than anything else.

When Isabelle’s grandmother finally passed though… nobody wanted to step up to the task of the town’s mayoral duties. Everyone seemed content to watch the town rot into the marsh, and Isabelle didn’t want any of that.

Boldly, she took on the role as mayor… and found herself quickly struggling. She was way too far in over her head, but felt she had no choice but to do it all alone…
At least, until the strange arrival of two newcomers. Newcomers that were here to stay.

It seemed a friend or two was all Isabelle needed, because alongside the help of Chantal, Laura, and the others they helped introduce… Isabelle has been able to work her hometown up to something she’s proud of – and something she’d her her grandma would be proud of, too.

Appearance

Isabelle is 5’02” (157cm), with a thin and lanky build. She has light orange eyes, and semi-aqueous short blue hair. While her hair may appear longer, her ‘pigtails’ are in fact her long, floppy ears. Her tail has a ‘fluffy’, bubbly underside, and shares her hair’s coloration. Like many seadogys, the water that makes up parts of her ‘fur’ is sustained and dry to the touch, albeit squishy.

Isabelle can often be seen sporting sailor-esque fashion, in part to her family’s culture. She likes to dress in a lightweight, cutesy manner in general.

Isabelle was designed by Marlboro, and joined Ultra Arc on July 13th, 2022

Personality

Isabelle is fundamentally a bit naive, in the way that she believes there’s nothing she can’t overcome. Whether others perceive this to be pathetic or endearing is up to personal preference, but more often than not, others will see her earnest attempts and lend a hand. While Waterfall has a reputation for harboring criminals, Isabelle has been relatively sheltered when it comes to more serious horrors of the world – contributing to her endless optimism and determination.
She doesn’t like to give up, and will often push herself until she fizzles out from stress. While she’s gotten better at it in recent times, she very often bites off more than she can chew, and doesn’t like to ‘give in’ by delegating tasks to others.

She wears her heart on her sleeve, showing her emotions in a very open, exaggerated manner. She rarely tends to show raw anger though, with her frustration manifesting in tears more often than not.
Still, she makes an active effort to try and not be perceived as ‘immature’… whether she’s successful or not though, is its own story.

Story

I’ll get to it… eventually.

Skills

Morale:

  • While Isabelle isn’t exactly the best at managing or coordinating teams, she’s an effective hypeman and can keep the motivational fires of others burning strong. While most of this is her contagious enthusiasm at play, she sometimes does tap into a factor of guilt in order to get others to keep from giving up.

Determination:

  • Isabelle is a woman who won’t give up, for better or for worse. Whether it be improving her town or confessing her feelings to her crush, Isabelle believes she can do anything as long as she doesn’t give in.
    • While Isabelle lacks self-discipline in many other factors, she was raised with strong values of persistence – so it shines through.

Relationships

Chantal – Co-mayor

When the mysterious duo came to Waterfall seeking refuge, Isabelle was more than happy to offer a safe place… which happened to include offering Chantal an on-the-spot job at town hall. While their organizational styles and work ethics certainly clash at times, Isabelle considers Chantal to be her best friend and trustworthy with anything.

Quill – Crush (Arc I) Wife (Arc II)

Something about the neighboring biome’s ambassador caught Isabelle’s fancy… be it her princely charm or her similar background, Quill was quite the case of puppy love for Isabelle. But it seemed that Quill found Isabelle to be endearing as well, and they make for quite a cute couple even after being together for years.

Laura – ‘Co-mayor’

Laura… isn’t quite a co-mayor, and calling her even the ‘mayoral greeter’ is pushing it a bit. Still, after Laura’s arrival alongside Chantal, Isabelle has been nothing but welcoming. While their personalities sometimes butt heads, Isabelle particularly enjoys watching movies with Laura and having Laura explain all the pop culture references that Isabelle had missed out on.

Lottie – Daughter (Arc II)

Isabelle’s relationship with her daughter is a bit of an odd one… as Isabelle approaches parenting less from a role of authority, and more from a role of a friend. Because of this, she’s very easygoing with Lottie and understands her speed very well – though is hesitant to push Lottie in places she could grow in.

Mildred – Godmother

The mysterious and often intimidating Mildred is actually a figure of great comfort to Isabelle – as Mildred was very close with Isabelle’s grandmother before her passing. It’s like in part to Mildred’s influence that Isabelle was able to get her foothold in mayoral office.

Minor relationships

Shiso – Dislikes

While it isn’t as far as to hate, Isabelle can’t find herself to enjoy Shiso’s presence, either. She doesn’t like how Shiso treats her like a child who can’t hold her own, even if Shiso does so out of a desire to look out for Quill.

Deni – Annoyed with

Isabelle wishes Deni would like… pay taxes, at least.

Trivia

  • Isabelle isn’t very handy with technology, as much of town hall was very ‘dated’ prior to Chantal and Laura’s arrival.
    • While she can use a TV dial perfectly, she struggles with remotes sometimes.
  • Like other seadogys, Isabelle does posses a beastform – however, she seldom takes it on, because she dislikes how its stature makes her look ‘childish’.
  • Despite what one would assume by her exterior, Isabelle swears often.
  • Isabelle is rather clumsy, and her coordination with her hands isn’t the best.
    • Because of this, Chantal will usually assist with writing documents, or Isabelle will use text-to-speech tools.

Meta commentary

  • Unsurprisingly, Isabelle’s inspiration is that of Isabelle from the Animal Crossing series.
  • Isabelle is my mayor character for my Welcome to Waterfall AC:NL romhack!
    • Vanilla game Isabelle hasn’t been swapped out yet though, which makes interactions between the two a bit silly.
