Magus is simply an ordinary magician… by her standards, at least. To others though, she’s anything but.
Like many in the Ultra Dirge, Magus was raised in a communal care center – though not being rabbitfolk nor blacephalon made her stand out a bit. Because of this, she was targeted by a regular bully among her peers… but it all seemed to fly over Magus.
Her head was in the clouds, as she’d get too lost in her encyclopedias of the Dirge’s history and the art of occultism to even notice.
This would-be pest eventually became a close friend through persistence, named Bonnie. And while Bonnie was able to improve and grow greatly upon entering adulthood, Magus… was the same as always.
She’s a shut-in, spending all day inside her dark apartment trying to draw connections and mixing strange occult concoctions. At best, Magus only leaves the house to train-hop her way over to Ultra Waterfall, to gather mushrooms. Still, she has an unchallenged confidence that she’ll get somewhere.
While she’d be fine with being persistent until she found her ‘big break’ herself, Magus’s new next-door apartment neighbor has her interest piqued. There’s a mystery full of danger that’s far larger than Magus can even begin to grasp… with her naivete-fueled sense of charisma, can Magus put the pieces together for real?
Appearance
As a kitsura, Magus is capable of taking on both a humanform and beastform visage – though the latter of which can only be maintained while her eyes are tightly shut.
In her humanform appearance, Magus is 5’10” (177cm) with a lithe build. She has messy white hair, grey-furred perky ears, and a rather large and striking rainbow-hued tail. She has small, unfeathered wings, and visible white markings on her cheeks.
Her beastform stands just over a foot tall, with its hair, ears, tail, and wings reflecting those in its humanform counterpart.
Regardless of form, Magus is almost always seen sporting a crooked witch’s hat, as well as the scarf she received after her birth tied with a bow around her neck.
Magus’s beastform was designed by Witchyr, and joined Ultra Arc on June 3rd, 2024
Personality
Magus may be naive and clueless about... a lot of things, but she's a quick learner and can pick up on cues and hunches quickly. She jumps to assumptions, and will operate on the basis that she's right - if she's not? She's quick to adapt. Her self-confidence and flexibility are practically unmatched, and even if Magus knows she's bit off more than she can chew, she'll jump in fearlessly anyways.
Her reactions regarding social pursuits vary greatly - most of the time, she tends to go with the wind very freely, giving others a carefree and charismatic energy. But really, she has no idea what she's doing half the time, and when one calls her bluff, she's quick to scramble.
Story
I'll get to it... eventually.
Skills
Species abilities:
- Dual-form:
- Kitsura are capable of switching between a humanoid form and beastform at will. Typically, the beastform can only be properly maintained if the individuals eyes are tightly shut.
- Cheek pouches:
- Though their exact origin is unknown, a kitsura's cheek pouches are capable of absorbing and channelling a small amount of divine energy, though it can increase with practice. However, many are unaware of this ability altogether, and it is often thought to be a hoax.
- ...Magus, despite her involvement in hobbyist occultism, also believed it wasn't real.

Confidence:
- If Magus is one thing, she's fearless - or at least, she appears to be. But even if she's genuinely scared, she doesn't let that get in her way, and walks with a self-assured air in everything she does. Some may call it naive or foolish, but her bravado does help her get through difficult situations and help her solve problems through sheer force.
- It's not a fake confidence at all - if Magus is ever in a place where she feels self-doubt, she'll make it very apparent.
Relationships
Bonnie - Best friend
Despite Bonnie being a cruel playground terror, Magus seemed to stick around by her side - and it's because of her company that Bonnie was eventually able to grow and improve as a person. Now, Bonnie tends to act as a 'lifeline' to Magus, trying to keep her from going entirely off the occultism deep end.
Dove - Neighbor & Crush
Magus thinks Dove is interesting and beautiful beyond words - while the two's personalities are almost opposites, it's a classic case of puppy love. Magus often finds herself trying to impress Dove with her various magic tricks and knowledge - while she knows Dove is involved with 'strange things' and often tags along on these inquests, Magus is oblivious to the true weight of it all.
Zoe - 'Mentor'
Magus isn't quite sure what to think about Zoe. She trusted her as a guide, only to have their trust toyed with and betrayed. Still, even if Zoe was dishonest, Magus was still able to learn from her - and hopes that she can some day convince Zoe that occultism isn't all just a hoax.
Minor relationships
Umi - Friendly acquaintance
While it was due to the accidental intervention of Magus that Umi was able to existentially stabilize, the two don't exactly know each other super well beyond being a friendly face. Though this is mostly due to the factor of geographic distance, as both parties have expressed interest in knowing the other better to Dove, a mutual friend.
Trivia
- The hat Magus wears was a custom-made birthday gift from Bonnie.
- It's a big comfort item, so she rarely ever takes it off... or cleans it.
- Magus is much more of a 'hard copy' gal, and very frequently gets books from libraries via mail. She'd love to visit more in-person, but location is an issue.
- She's tried using social media on the Ultranet because of Bonnie, but quickly found herself getting into arguments over occultism and decided it wasn't worth her time.
- Though she typically sticks to 'empty' areas of Waterfall where there are more mushrooms to harvest, few who have spotted her have mistaken her for a local due to visiting so often.
- She can be a bit clumsy at times.
Meta commentary
- Magus takes many nods to Marisa Kirisame from Touhou, as is a surprise to no one.
- Her name is from one of Marisa's themes, Magus night.
