While Mal was born to a family of bakers, she always had a dream of becoming a Pokemon Center nurse – partially in part to being prone to accidents and bad luck.
Through lots of studying, and more than a few close calls, Mal was able to land herself a student job at one of the local Centers! Her family was proud, and Mal was proud too… at least, until the accident.
An accidental poisoning followed by a toxic chemical spill followed by one thing after another… led to the deaths of Mal’s pokemon, and her dignity.
Knowing the severity of her mistake and the repercussions, Mal faked her death and fled to Kanto. But with her pokemon now gone, she was truly alone… but when a compliment to a woman who shared Mal’s sense of fashion turned into conversation, Mal was offered something extraordinary – her pokemon, back to life.
Though the fashionable scientist’s job was a bit botched, Mal couldn’t be happier – and even if they hadn’t made the agreement that Mal would be her lab assistant in exchange, Mal felt she’d gladly follow the scientist Naoko to the ends of the earth.
Mal doesn’t feel as though she’s doing anything wrong, per say, but just how far away is her next disaster?
Appearance
Mal is 5’7″, with a skinny build. She has light pink hair often decorated with decora clips, and pastel blue eyes. She has very light freckles, and chemical burns on her hands – though these are often covered by gloves.
She’s a huge fan of pastel fairy kei fashion.

Personality
Mal is very nervous, but also very sweet. She’s more concerned about messing up things for herself than she is anxious around others, and is actually quite outgoing despite being timid.
If she percieves that she’s done something wrong, she will apologize excessively.
She’s very empathetic, to a bit of an excessive degree – and has been known to form bonds towards inanimate objects and even concepts. She doesn’t mind it much, but this can lead to her being stressed out very easily.

Skills
Toxicology:
- After the accident, Mal gained a bit of an obsession with various kinds of poisons, both natural and chemical. She’s very quick to identify them, and tends to know exactly what they do. She cites with obsession as ‘not wanting to make the same mistake again’.
- Despite her fondness for poison, Mal does not like most poison pokemon – usually citing the bad smell. However, she’s noted that she’d like a nidoran as a pet someday.
Nursing:
- Despite it ending in spectacular failure, Mal does technically have student nursing level skills. Though she is prone to oversights and mixing things up, she serves as a lab assistant to Naoko – who just thinks a set of extra hands is good enough.
Relationships
Naoko – Assisted scientist
Mal is completely infatuated with Naoko, even if Naoko often responds to this infatuation coldly due to her general affect and nature. Naoko doesn’t scare Mal at all – all Mal sees is someone who can forgive her mistakes, and shares her interest in fashion to boot.
Maribelle – Sister
Maribelle is Mal’s twin sister – and though they don’t talk anymore since Mal technically faked her own death, the two were close before that. It’s thanks to Maribelle that Mal’s interest in fashion is so strong.
Trivia
- Due to the substitutions used when clone-reviving Mal’s swablu, it appears much different than a normal swablu – having a pink color and psychic/flying typing.
- Mal lacks some sensitivity in her hands due to the chemical burns, often causing her to fumble with smaller objects.
- She didn’t have much of an online identity before fleeing to Kanto, making faking her own death a lot easier than it should have.
- Her family does, however, have suspicions that she is alive, and hopes that Mal will come back home in time.
Meta commentary
- Mal is named as such because of that one post on tumblr that’s like ‘Call me Dr. Mal… Mal practice.’ – whether Mal’s last name is actually ‘Practice’ though is up to you.
- …This would mean Maribelle’s last name would also be ‘Practice’.
