Mary

The Ultra Dirge is a hotspot for occultists of all kinds, be them hobbyists or those who look to the practice in a more religious sense. Of the former group, one mercenary’s unprecedented technical skill shines above everyone else…

Mary’s interest in occultism started like many of her creed – as a hobby she found mildly intriguing. But through years of work and dedication, Mary’s mastery rose to a level where she’s now broadly considered one of the most skilled non-religious occultists in the Dirge area.
She uses her skills for mercenary work, to the point of being one of the few beast hunters capable of safely and effectively taking down guzzlord.

It’s for this reason that a self proclaimed keeper of balance often requests her work – and unlike the others, all Mary ever really requests from Sendai is a good drink together.
So, when Sendai presented the case of an exceedingly powerful anomaly – one who’s impending collapse could spell large-scale destruction – Mary figured it’d be quick work.

What Mary didn’t account for, though, was the recursion anomaly’s adoring lovebird – an amateur occultist determined to fight fate itself.
What she lacked in technical skill, she made up for in determination – and though Mary was initially annoyed that she kept getting in the way, the amateur’s gusto made an impression on Mary.
That even fate itself could be defied.

While things may be a lot calmer in comparison nowadays, Mary still lives her life seeking new thrills and adventures wherever she can find them – because evidently, even she has yet to see everything in the world of the anomalous.

Appearance

As a kitsura, Mary is capable of taking on both a humanform and beastform visage – though the latter of which can only be maintained while her eyes are tightly shut. While Mary may sparsely take on her beastform to execute rituals that’d benefit from the slightly increased energy channeling potential, she tends to prefer her humanform otherwise.

In her humanform appearance, Mary is 5’10” (177cm) with an average-stocky build. She has short, messy ginger hair, and olive eyes. The folded over ears atop her head match her hair’s color and relative messiness, and her tail is curled and of similar color.

In her beastform appearance, Mary is rather large comparatively at a foot and a half tall. She retains the ears, tail, and general coloration of her humanform appearance.

Regardless of form, Mary keeps the brown swirl-patterned scarf she received after birth on at practically all times. Mary also has a secondary swirl-patterned scarf located on her hat, which she crafted herself to give her a boost with channeling energy.

Mary’s beastform was designed by Spikedpeach, and joined Ultra Arc on September 11th, 2025

Personality

While Mary is a hard worker at her core, her way of communication can definitely be described as laid-back. She has a solid sense of core confidence, so she doesn’t see any sort of issue with playing around in her off time – even if it may make others doubt her for a second.
In those cases though, Mary will be sure to demonstrate her thorough dedication masterfully. Some have described it as ‘quite scary’, the way Mary’s demeanor can go from easygoing and casual to dead serious when she’s locked in to a job or task.

While she’s broadly friendly to everyone, she doesn’t consider many to be close personal friends – and would opt to annoy those that she’s truly bonded with more than find more people to annoy. It’s for this reason that she’s adamant of refusing those who want her mentorship – though she’s definitely not opposed to sharing her knowledge as a one-off.

Story

I’ll get to it… eventually.

Skills

Species abilities:

  • Dual forms:
    • Kitsura are capable of switching between a humanoid form and beastform at will. Typically, the beastform can only be properly maintained if the individual’s eyes are tightly shut.
  • Cheek pouches:
    • Though their exact origin is unknown, a kitsura’s cheek pouches are capable of absorbing and channeling a small amount of divine energy, though it can increase with practice. However, many are unaware of this ability altogether, and it is often thought to be a hoax.
      • Mary has practically trained this potential to its limit, and will sometimes even utilize her beastform in order to execute complicated or more power-consuming occult tasks.

Occultism:

  • Though Mary may not be an occultist in the religious sense, she certainly knows her way around the practices, methods, and rituals of channelling divine energy. Started as a hobby when she was a teenager, Mary’s expertise after decades of practice is now practically unmatched.
    • She specializes in quickly and accurately scratching out sigils, which is particularly useful in the fast paced, high intensity field of beast hunting that Mary is in.
      • While they may be accurate and preform well on a technical level, others in her field tend to criticize the aesthetics of Mary’s speedily-done sigils.
    • The single glove mary wears is scribed with a sigil for a weak, laser-like flashbang – allowing her to use it at any time.

Relationships

Sendai – Close comrade

Sendai isn’t exactly the type to openly refer to anyone as a ‘best friend’, let alone doing so to someone like Mary… but the reality is that both of them trust each other more than anyone else. Onlookers will sometimes find them reminiscent of an old married couple, before getting bonked on the head by either of the two.

Magus – Friends

Mary’s initial impression of Magus wasn’t the best – she was a pest who was too blinded by puppy love to let Mary do her job. But Magus seemed to do the impossible, and changed Mary’s outlook on the concept of fate itself… so, the two remain in contact even after the incident – though strictly as casual friends. Mary cannot STAND Magus’s slap-dash occultist work, which prevents them from working together.

Dove – Complicated

While Mary would like to make amends with Dove, it’s tricky given the circumstances. The background sense of unease that Mary gets from Dove being such a powerful anomaly definitely doesn’t help… but for the most part, the two acknowledge that the past is in the past, and they shouldn’t dwell on it more than they do already.

Honglin – Honorary niece

Honglin has always been very inquisitive, and would often ask more technical-level questions about occultism to Mary when she would be babysat as a child. Though Honglin has become a bit more closed off as she’s gotten older, she still sometimes spends time in Mary’s presence as a quiet and safe ‘third space’.

The Twins – Honorary niece & nephew

Mary babysits the twins sometimes, and finds them a great audience for storytelling. Strangely enough, Mary’s sensitivity towards divine energy allows her to predict the twin’s mood a bit better – by associating which twin has more active energy with how they’re feeling.

Minor relationships

Dee – Familiar bartender

While not quite a regular, Mary has visited Dee’s bar enough for Dee to recognize her and her order preferences. The two have some solidarity over being similar in age range, though that’s about it – drunken rambles about occultism might as well be an entirely different language to Dee.

Trivia

  • Mary’s staff is fully used for mobility and serves no purpose in her profession – though she absolutely will still point it around in fanciful gestures like it has power, regardless.
  • Mary can’t consume any sort of media about occultism, as she can’t stand the inaccuracies.
    • In cases of non-fiction, it still inevitably boils down to a sense of ‘I know more than you’.
  • Her habit of telling long stories is actually her attempt at bragging while being discreet about it.
    • Sendai and Dove immediately see right through this.
  • Mary’s music taste can best be described as ‘dad rock’.

Meta commentary

  • Mary is un-subtly inspired by Marisa Kirisame from Touhou Project, as her being a mirror to Sendai would imply.
