No place like home
“I guess your friend was right… I do feel at home here. It feels like I belong here.”
-Lune, Something about family
In the start…
I never got to play Black and White 2 after launch. I thought it was dumb, that the legendaries were over-designed, and that there was nothing interesting in the games. My brother got the game and never finished it, only for the cart to be stolen by an ex-friend.
Out of the blue, chasing the high of early Pokeau and post-ORAS, I wanted to play the only Pokemon game I had yet to play.
I found the cart at a gamestop for like ~$40, which is… not bad considering what an authentic cart goes for now in comparison.
As I did, I named my player character not after myself, but after a potential canvas for a new OC.
Her name was Lune.
Now, I already had an attachment to N from years prior. In fact, I was no stranger to having shipped an OC with him in the past, far before Pokeau existed (though this OC did also happen to be a kitsune-zoroark, some things never change).
What I wasn’t expecting was for a new player to enter the ring.
They met in Castelia City, at night.
From then until the end of the game, when she finally reunited with N – it was clear the three were meant to be. At least in my heart.
Lune – The queen behind it all
Lune was always a little bit… unhinged. While early Pokeau was kind of a disjointed mess without a real plot anyways, Lune stood out as a vessel for the wild.
She was ruthless, unrestrained, and carefree. And though the original intent of Lune was indeed a self-insert, the identities quickly shifted and Lune became a character I affectionately refer to as a girlfriend, even if I’m like, half joking.
It’s amazing to see her development over the years, from the peppy but secretly crass idol to a projection of burnout and loneliness. And despite everything, Lune has her family to help and cherish her through her struggles.
She also happens to keep getting me hate mail for the fact that she’s with either N or Colress from people who ship those two with someone else, which I think is really funny.
She’s Pokeau’s cringe queen, and though she’s changed vastly over the years, her love will ultimately carry her on.
N – The internet heartthrob
It’s kind of weird seeing a lot of fan content on N now, if I’m being honest.
Because after so long, he doesn’t really feel like a character anymore – but like someone who’s real to me.
Which can be said for much of Pokeau’s cast, but N’s sheer popularity in the overall Pokemon fanbase makes him stand out in this regard.
So, when people are constantly fighting over headcanons and ships and other fandom nonsense over a character that feels real to you… it’s a bit exhausting. I’m glad that he has a space away from all that in my mind, where it’s just him and his partners who love him and his friends.
Ultimately, the fandom doesn’t matter here – aside from providing pretty pictures of him to look at.
Colress – An introspection of the self
Here’s some fun trivia! Which member of the trio do I connect to most?
It’s totally not the only one who’s not a fox, right? Right??
As Lune began to stray from being a self-insert and became her own character, I began to connect more to Colress – to a point where he eventually reached an introspective role very similar to Zinnia’s.
Interested in the inner workings of the world around him and constantly trying to solve new problems, Colress ended up taking on more ‘odd’ traits as I projected more onto him. His idealism, mixed empathy, and penchant for mania are traits I kind of shoved onto him as he became more of a canvas.
…And the fursona. He has a fursona because of me too.
And though I tend to examine the feelings relating to identity and humanity through N and Lune more, Colress is not exempt given that he’s also of the shapeshifting variety in Pokeau.
Feelings regarding if you’re living up to who you’re supposed to be or if you’re really making the most of your potential tend to be the theme around this.
So, thanks TPC, for giving me your funny science man to hit with my Beams. He has two partners now who he kisses every day it’s wonderful.
Spinch – The next generation
Spinch was a joke character at first – hence the name.
In my Pokeau Sims 4 save, I had risky woohoo on because I wanted 2 different characters to ‘design a fankid for me’ (this happened to be Ruby, actually). However, when I switched over to the Harmonia household, I forgot to turn it off… and, well, thing happened.
I had originally insisted that Spinch was NOT CANON and a joke character. The plot had not yet reached a point where the postgame existed. I’d often claim that if certain wild things happened (like Artfight now crashing on day 1), that I’d make Spinch canon.
But, despite none of those wild things happening… Spinch grew on me a lot.
Because while the idea of raising children myself in real life is unappealing, a kid in my idealistic fantasy world doesn’t sound like the worst.
Their childlike wonder and enthusiasm was fun to imagine and write, bringing a new burst of energy into the room.
And then, seeing them ‘grow up’ and go onto their own arc is a bit bittersweet, almost like watching a chick leave the nest.
They’re very near and dear to me, as a result of the love between the original Harmonias.
A love that could last a lifetime…
May 25th, the day which happens to be Lune’s birthday, is the first recorded mention on the trio on my tumblr archives – in the year 2015. As of writing this, it’s been 7 years that they’ve been together! Though there’s been struggles with the trio both in-universe and in meta, I’m so happy that I’ve had them around for this long. Their love is one of the core pillars of Pokeau, and without them, I’m not even sure if Pokeau would still exist.
I hope that, wherever they are out there, the three of them are cozy together.
