Another day where it all goes wrong. Again.

His friend wanted to see the baby. It shouldnā€™t have been an argument, butā€¦

Lune just sighed.

Sheā€™d been out for a while, but time felt painfully still. Her stash had run dry, and being sober with her emotions was something Lune could barely stand anymore.

It wasnā€™t good. It wasnā€™t right.

But she was already digging a hole for herself ā€“ what matter was it if she upgraded to a more comfortable shovel.

Crunch.

The sound of underbrush caught Lune off guard as she was spiraling into her own thoughts again.

Was it a trespasser? A poacher? That would be nice ā€“ a shady figure to make quick work of to offload emotions.

Lune quickly altered her appearance to the equally shady-looking androgynous figure sheā€™d use back in her heyday to avoid pressing fans.

Because nobody would pay attention to a disheveled person in a hoodie and sweats, right?

As Lune revealed herself, the sudden truth of the scenario hit her fast and hard, and before she could even reactā€¦

ā€œAugh! Thereā€™s someone there?! Oi, are you human?ā€

Ginger hair like fire in the sun between the trees. Still wearing a basic post-op eyepatch, after all these years.

For once, she didnā€™t smell like smoke.

Unsure of how to react, Lune pinned down a new voice. If she could ensure the woman didnā€™t recognize her in any wayā€¦

ā€œWhat an odd question.ā€ Lune replied, in a voice that wasnā€™t her own.

ā€œIā€™m assuming if I am, youā€™d call the cops on me? Neither of us are supposed to be out here past the fence.ā€

A deafening pause, that, while only lasting a few seconds, felt like an eternity. Lune had to know if her bluff was enough to get past her.

ā€œPshh, no fuckinā€™ way! What, do I like like a snitch to you?ā€ she said with a snort.

ā€œNot gonna question it, suppose. We all got our own reasons, and I bet my reason sounds weird as hell anyways.ā€

The woman began to climb the chainlink fence that separated the forest from the highway, and Lune took a deep breath.

Maybe, just for a day.

Maybe the slate could be clean.

ā€œHold on.ā€ Lune said, waving at the woman to stop.

ā€œThereā€™s a bit of a makeshift path to a gap in the fence not far from here. It has some cover so you wonā€™t get stopped, unlike if you walked along the highway.ā€

ā€œOh, for real? I had no idea. I, uh, donā€™t go here much, I was only visiting a friend.ā€

ā€œI can show you the way, if you wouldnā€™t mind.ā€

ā€œNot at all!ā€

Her smile was bright, and she walked over to the disguised Lune with a pep in her step.

ā€œMy nameā€™s Angie, nice to meet you!ā€

Right. Thereā€™s no way Lune could call herself that to her. Time for a new name.

ā€œIā€™mā€¦ Yue.ā€

That was pathetic.

A chance to have a clean slate, and Luneā€™s poor mood was already ruining her first impressions.

ā€œNice to meetcha, then! Letā€™s get moving, if youā€™re up to join me for the hike.ā€

Lune led Angie over to the path that had been carved through the steps of many seeking the gap in the fence.

She could leave now. By all means, Angie was smart. She could figure her way out of the forest herself.

Everything inside Lune was screaming for her to leave. That sheā€™d already ruined this one, too.

Butā€¦

ā€œYou said you had a friend living here?ā€ Lune asked, as the two started walking down the path.

ā€œOh, yeah, I guess itā€™s a bit weird, consideringā€¦ people arenā€™t allowed to settle here. But I guess heā€™s not entirely human, either? Which was what prompted my first question, haha.ā€

ā€œNo, I can see it. Thereā€™s a few staple campers and cabins here and there. Sounds like an odd guy.ā€

ā€œMm, yeah, heā€™sā€¦ eccentric. But heā€™s been my best friend since we were little kids, so Iā€™d kind of go to the ends of the earth for him.ā€ Angie replied with a chuckle.

ā€œHey, I hope this isnā€™t weird to ask, butā€¦ are you doing alright, man?ā€

The question caught Lune a bit off guard.

ā€œWhat do you mean?ā€

ā€œI guess itā€™s a bit weird, considering we just met, but Iā€™m just gettingā€¦ vibes. Itā€™s hard to pin it, but it just feels like youā€™ve got something going on, Yue.ā€

Lune paused her walk for a bit, and sighed.

It really was that obvious she was miserable, wasnā€™t it?

ā€œ…Maybe.ā€ she mumbled.

ā€œI guessā€¦ I go for nature walks here to try and clear my head, butā€¦ itā€™s not working this time.ā€

ā€œAhh, I see.ā€ Angie nodded.

ā€œWell, I canā€™t force you to follow me through the hike if you donā€™t want to, Yue. But Iā€™m thankful for your help pointing me the right way! So even if something else went wrong, you can at least know you made someone elseā€™s day better.ā€

She had a nice smile. It was one unfamiliar to Lune.

ā€œI suppose soā€¦ Iā€™ll try and keep that in mind.ā€ Lune huffed.

Angie thought for a second.

ā€œHey, if youā€™d like, I remembered seeing an ice cream place not to far from the start of the fence. I can get you something from here, my treat! It seems like you need it.ā€

ā€œThatā€¦ would be nice. Thatā€™s very kind of you.ā€

ā€œNo prob! Something I learned while I was off on a League journey back in Galar a few years back.ā€ Angie said with a smile.

ā€œSometimes you need a pick-me-up, and sometimes even just kindness from a stranger can make things more bearable.ā€

And though part of Luneā€™s disguise included a face mask, she was sure to give Angie a smile back.

ā€œSo, erm, Angieā€¦ you went adventuring in Galar? That sounds interesting.ā€

The two walked and talked down the path, using the interest in her adventure as a jumping-off point.

ā€œI was kind of miserable, didnā€™t know what the hell I wanted to do with my life.ā€ Angie started.

ā€œBut seeing so many new places and new peopleā€¦ it showed a brighter side to life Iā€™d tried to shut out, I think.ā€

ā€œThat sounds really niceā€¦ I feel like I could use that at this point, honestly.ā€ Lune said with a sigh.

ā€œIā€™m not sure if I can do that right now, though. Iā€™llā€¦ keep a pin in it for later, I suppose.ā€

ā€œA step is a step, no matter how small it is!ā€ Angie said.

ā€œOi, thereā€™s the end of the fence!ā€

The two made it past the end of the fence, and per some directional help from Lune, made their way to the ice cream shop. Angie paid for the both of them, and just as the two were about to sit down, Angieā€™s phone started to ring.

ā€œHold on, lemme take this!ā€ she said, fishing her phone out of her pocket while still holding her ice cream cone in the other.

ā€œHello? ā€¦ I guess Iā€™m not too busy right now, but ā€¦ What do you mean ā€˜youā€™re good with cats?ā€™ Are you having cat issues you need me for? ā€¦ Mitziā€™s being a pain? Yea, ok, give me like 15.ā€

Angie hung up and gave a groan-like sigh.

ā€œSorry, I left my meowth where Iā€™m staying, and apparently sheā€™s causing problemsā€¦ sucks to leave ya like this, but I donā€™t want the room Iā€™m staying in to smell like cat piss.ā€

Lune was already in a lighter mood after their hike, so Angieā€™s frustrated phrasing elicited a bit of a snort.

ā€œThatā€™s alright! We all have different things to take care of.ā€ she said with a smile.

ā€œThank you for the treat, though. Iā€™m glad that even if itā€™s for a moment, I could meet someone like you, Angie.ā€
