Rabbitfolk are a humanform species, most commonly found in either the Ultra Craters or Ultra Station. They’re known for their long ears and halos of divine energy, as well as their deep-rooted connected to the Skymother herself. They’re more colloquially referred to as ‘rabbitfolk’.
Appearance
Rabbitfolk come in two subdivisions, being diurnal and noctural. Whether a rabbitfolk individual is diurnal or nocturnal is based in both genetic and environmental factors, with diurnal rabbitfolk being more common in locations that retain natural light, while nocturnal populations are the opposite.
Regardless of subtype, rabbitfolk all posses some form of animal ears, though rabbit-like are overwhelmingly common, unless in cases of crossbreeding with other species. They also all have pawed feet, with fur on their legs going up to the thigh at its highest.
The lunar mark, a unique relic of the specie’s tie to Skymother, manifests based on phase on the individual’s left or right leg, depending on the ‘phase’ of the mark. The excess divine energy from this also creates a halo based off this phase shortly after birth.
Diurnal rabbitfolk have a white-colored sclera, with their lunar mark on their left leg – while nocturnal rabbitfolk have a black sclera, and their lunar mark is on their right leg.
There are otherwise no drastic differences in appearance between the two, though nocturnal rabbitfolk seem to be more commonly effected with skin pigment loss.
Another common, but not necessarily biological feature, is that many rabbitfolk will wear some form of choker or collar – this allows them to use the divine energy from their halo to convert it into a protective head bubble. They usually gain this ability upon reaching maturity at 18, though some may wear these collars earlier on due to cultural significance.
While they can be removed, not wearing one is seen as a heavily risky move that warrants extremely bad luck.
Biology
The standard function and layout of a rabbitfolk individual’s internal factors are largely the same as the other humanform species, though they do stand out in having a particularly long lifespan, as well as a relatively short gestation period – which has led to them being quite populous.
Rabbitfolk physically mature at age 18, and retain the look of what could be considered ‘young adult’ until age 150 – though like other humanforms, factors like stress may speed up the onset of features of age. 150-250 is considered ‘middle aged’, while any individual older than 250 years old is considered ‘elderly’.
Like other humanforms, rabbitfolk are omnivores, though aren’t quite considered a ‘predator’ species, as they’ve historically lacked a heavy hunting instinct and often prefer flight over fight. For this reason, their diets mainly revolve around plant matter and processed animal byproduct.
While they are capable of crossbreeding with other humanform species, features such as the lunar mark and halo tend to not be passed along to hybrid offspring, but it isn’t unheard of.
They are an incredibly adaptable species, though diurnal rabbitfolk tend to find adaptation to bright, warmer climates easier, while nocturnal rabbitfolk more naturally flock to darker, colder areas.
Socialization
Rabbitfolk are an extremely social species, if not one of the most social species in the sapient division. They're quickly able to form tight-knit communities and bonds, including with non-rabbitfolk. It's not uncommon for an individual to be in a dedicated bonded pair or trio, the nature of which may be platonic or romantic.
Lack of frequent contact with other living beings can be incredibly detrimental to rabbitfolk, though some have been known to self-isolate due to traumatic experiences, like other humanform species.
Because of their high social drive and desire to form bonds, it's very easy for other species to co-habitate with rabbitfolk - the primary case of which being in Ultra Station, where the normally socially isolated species of deoxys and rabbitfolk co-habitate in society with no large-scale conflicts.
Abilities
Head bubble:
- Once reaching physical maturity, rabbitfolk are capable of converting their halo into a head bubble, if wearing a form of choker or collar. This head bubble provides for complete protection from airborne or atmospheric dangers, as well as provides an infinite supply of breathable air for the duration in which the bubble is active.
- If a rabbitfolk is to attempt to summon their bubble without a neckpiece, the bubble will be unable to create a proper seal and any safety benefits it provides are nullified.
Trivia
- While it's commonly assumed that rabbitfolk have a biological 'drive to explore', it's simply just a common cultural ideal.
- Rabbitfolk tend to be one of the most religious species, due to directly being tied to Skymother and being her 'final and favorite creation'. This is more prominent in the Crater's population.
- Due to their ease of interaction with just about every sapient species, rabbitfolk tend to be in inter-species relationships more frequently.
- Allegedly, Skymother's mortal form is that of a rabbitfolk.
Meta commentary
- Coelunes were the first species group I ever joined! I have a bit of a soft spot for them, as it's entirely their fault that Ultra Arc even exists.
